But for my money, I prefer a villain that is human, flawed, conflicted, motivated by more than simple bloodlust of power-mongering. What’s the motivation? What is he so dang angry about? Just being villainous for the sake of villainy or evil seemed flat, limited, or less interesting than a more developed or nuanced character.ĭon’t get me wrong-there’s certainly something to be said for scenery-chewing, maniacal, genocidal, assassin-god worshipping, remorseless villains. Growing up, I read about the Saurons and Lord Fouls and other nefarious baddies, and while I always got a kick out of them, even as a kid I found myself asking “Why?” a lot.
